Common Flight Experince Questions

How long are the flight experiences?
This depends on which package you choose. We offer shorter flights that last 15 minutes to premium packages that offer up to 5-hour flight experiences. Duxford truly has something on offer for everybody.
Do you offer flying lessons from Duxford airport?

Yes we can now offer flying lessons at Duxford airport – along with a range of flying experiences! Duxford is ripe with vintage aircraft history, so it’s only fitting that we offer a selection of classic wings and packages in Duxford for you to choose from.

Which landmarks should I look out for during my flight?
This depends on which tour you choose, but try to keep your eyes peeled for the impressive King’s College chapel or the banks of the serene River Cam!
What type of flights are there?
You can choose from:

20 minute Tiger Moth Flight
30 minute Tiger Moth Flight
40 minute Tiger Moth Flight

Sightseeing Tours in a Dragon Rapid
– Sightseeing Tour of Cambridgeshire
– Flight over Cambridge, Ely and Newmarket
– Flight over Landmarks of London
What will I see during my flight?
Duxford is a place jam-packed with history and plenty for your eyes to feast on.
In our variety of sightseeing tours, you can admire the whole South East of England in some of Britain’s most iconic war-time aircraft. Admire the prestigious University City of Cambridge, follow the flow of the River Cam and spot the pinnacles of King’s College Chapel.  Or set south and see the famous panoramic skyline of London. Fly over the sights of the Capital including Big Ben, Tower Bridge and of course the London Eye!
What happens after my flight?
Once you’ve come back down to earth, enjoy free access into the Duxford Imperial War Museum (your guests will also get half price entry!). The IWM is a spectacular museum where you can get up close and explore the amazing variety of aviation history from the First World War up to present day.
Do I need to bring anything for my flight?
The main thing you have to bring is yourself and your Air Experiences voucher! For the flight itself, bring along a jacket as it can get cold in an open cockpit plane, a hat and sunglasses in-case it’s a sunny day and of course a camera.
What should I wear for my flight?
It’s usually best to wear jeans and a t-shirt unless it’s a hot day then we suggest shorts. Inside the aircraft it can get quite warm, kind of like a greenhouse.

Ladies no skirts or dresses or heels as you’ll be climbing in and out of the cockpit. A hat or cap and sunglasses can be useful.
For an open cockpit experience it will be best to dress up light but warm.

What’s the best time of year to go flying in an open cockpit plane?
This is an all year-round activity as long as the sun is shining! Ideally the summer is best due to the longer days, nicer weather and warmer temperatures. However, you can get some of the most beautiful, crisp, blue sky, frosty days in the winter where the air is silky smooth but you’ve got to wrap up warm!
How old do you have to be for a flight?
Tiger Moth minimum age is 14yrs and maximum age is 89yrs.
There is no age limit on the Dragon Rapide.
Will I get to have a go at flying the plane myself?
Definitely! You can do as much or as little flying as you wish. Your instructor will do the take-off and landing but once in the air at some point during the lesson your instructor will ask if you want to take control of the plane. We have got to say it is one of the best feelings flying a plane!
How do you fly a plane?
To operate a plane, we use a stick with our hands and rudders with our feet. When you climb into the plane your instructor will run through the pre-flight checks and demonstrate the stick and rudder movements. When you move the stick backwards and forwards it will make the plane climb and descend. Move the stick left and right will move the ailerons to make you roll left and right, and you push the pedals with your feet will help you with your turns.
The planes generally like slow movements rather than harsh yanking motions.
Who will be with me on the flight?
In the Tiger Moths you will be sitting in-front of your pilot as it is a tandem designed cockpit. Your fully qualified pilot will be talking to you through the headset and explaining everything they are doing and landmarks to keep your eye out for whilst flying around the Cambridgeshire countryside.
Can passengers come with me?
Passengers can come with you in the 8-seater Dragon Rapide, which was used as an airliner in the 1930’s!
What do I need to wear for an open cockpit experience?
No matter the weather, we would always recommend a jacket and pair of gloves when in an open cockpit experience. It can get extremely chilly in the sky, so it’s always best to wrap up!
